6.9% decrease in the reported Crime Rate in 2017

Recently, the state of Florida released the annual Uniform Crime Rate (UCR) report, which reflects the various crimes reported during 2017.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Recently, the state of Florida released the annual Uniform Crime Rate (UCR) report, which reflects the various crimes reported during 2017.

The UCR focuses on 7 areas that include Homicide, Robbery, Rape, Burglary, Aggravated Assault, Larceny/Theft, and Arson.

Tonight, I am extremely proud to share with you that the 2017 UCR data reflects a significant 6.9% decrease in the reported Crime Rate per 100,000 citizens as compared to 2016.

The Crime Rate per 100,000 citizens is truly an “apples to apples” comparison where communities can better identify and track crime trends over time.

This latest figure represents an overall decrease of 22.06% for the unincorporated areas of Brevard County since January 2013 and even more exciting, our Crime Rate is now the lowest it has been in the past 22 years.

Now while there are many factors that can impact the crime rate, there is no question that we have seen a significant change in our crime rate because our agency aggressively targets criminals and because we have an amazing partnership with our citizens who work with us each and every day to protect our community. By working together to prevent and solve crimes we have made a huge dent in our Crime Rate like no other time in recent history!

This is also an opportunity for me to brag about the incredible members of your Brevard County Sheriff’s Office who put their lives on the line to make sure we have one of the safest communities in the country!! Regardless if they are a Deputy, a member of our Corrections Team, a Communications Officer, a Maritime Security Officer, the person who does payroll or the person that makes our computers turn on, each has a unique responsibility and vital role in our mission and success!

I have always believed that the only way to truly impact crime is to partner with our citizens and to provide them with vital Crime Prevention information before they become a victim and not after. By partnering together we give our citizens every opportunity to protect themselves, their homes and their businesses so that they don’t become crime’s next victim!

While we are extremely fortunate to have lowered our Crime Rate by over 22% in the past 5 years, we need to keep in mind that now is NOT the time to let up, but instead is the time to keep our boots firmly planted on the throat of crime and boldly state that while lowering our crime rate is our goal, keeping our citizens safe is our number one priority!!

On behalf of the 1,500 proud men and women that I have the honor of serving with, we hope you truly know how much we appreciate your incredible support and partnership!
