Motorcycle Deputy Nathaniel Kirk injured in crash
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Motorcycle Deputy Nathaniel Kirk was injured after he was involved in a crash on State Road 528 Thursday afternoon.
According to BCSO PIO Tod Goodyear, Deputy Kirk began his service with the Sheriff’s Office in February of 2015 and has been assigned to the Motor Unit since October 2017.
Deputy Kirk is currently being treated at a local hospital where he is listed in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries.
According to Cocoa Police Public Information Officer Yvonne Martinez, at approximately 2:15 p.m. Thursday, Cocoa police patrol officers and fire rescue personnel responded to the eastbound lanes of State Road 528 just east of the Industry Road/State Road 524 exit for a reported motorcycle crash.
“When officers arrived they located a BCSO motor deputy in the median with injuries,” said Martinez.
“The deputy was conscious, alert and able to speak. He was airlifted to the trauma hospital as a precaution. State Road 528 was shut down in both directions while emergency crews worked the incident.”
According to multiple witnesses, Deputy Kirk had activated his lights and was attempting to stop a vehicle.
The witnesses described the motorcycle as “wobbling” several times before it hit a dead animal in the roadway causing the deputy to lose control. The deputy ejected from the motorcycle and landed in the median.
“Cocoa police traffic officers responded to document the crash scene, interview witnesses and take appropriate measurements,” said Martinez.
Cocoa police traffic officers are investigating the single-vehicle crash.
