Police Arrest Woman For Failing To Secure Firearm, 13-Year-Old Son Uses Gun To Shoot Two Teens

**UPDATE**BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Palm Bay police have arrested a woman for failing to properly secure her firearm that resulted in her 13-year-old son taking her firearm and using it to shoot two children on Saturday.

Police say the woman has been identified as 33-year-old Brenda Maldonado. She has been charged with Culpable Negligence and unsafe storage of a Firearm.

“Detectives determined Maldonado was the owner of the firearm and failed to take proper measures to secure the weapon allowing her 13-year-old son access,” said Lt. Steve Bland of the Palm Bay Police Department.

Maldonado is currently being held at the Brevard County Jail on a $55,000 bond.

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Palm Bay Police have released more information on the shooting that seriously injured two children on Saturday.

The suspect has been identified as a 13-year-old boy.

The report says officers received a 911 call around 5:47 p.m. about a shooting that injured two people on the 1400 block of Rila St. SE in Palm Bay.

When officers arrived, they found the two children shot and transferred them immediately to a nearby hospitals for treatment.

“One of the victims was later transferred to Arnold Palmer Hospital,” according to a Palm Bay Police spokesperson.

“The victims are both listed in serious but stable condition.”

The suspect was located and taken into custody by police, shortly after officers arrived on scene.

Officers say they recovered a semi-automatic handgun that they believe was used to carry out the shooting.

The teen suspect has been charged with Attempted Murder, Occupied Burglary and Possession of a Firearm under 21. More charges could be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.

A motive for the shooting is still under investigation by investigators.
