Viera Charter School’s Odyssey of the Mind Team Seeks Support to Go to World Finals

Viera Charter School’s Odyssey of the Mind is working to raise $20,000 to send its winning middle school team to the World Final competition in Ames, Iowa May 23-26. Students headed to the competition hosted by Iowa State University include Kaelin Alvarado, Anna Brait, Haylee Johnson, Ryan Luciani, Stephanie Whiteman, Taylor Weiss and Andersen Law.

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Viera Charter School’s Odyssey of the Mind is working to raise $20,000 to send its winning middle school team to the World Final competition in Ames, Iowa May 23-26.

Viera Charter School is a Brevard public school of choice serving grades K-8. Its focus is on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) education. The school won first place in the entire state April 14 at the competition held at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Odyssey of the Mind is the largest creative problem-solving competition in the world and according to its website “develops skills in young people that help them thrive in our technical world.”

There were a total of 820 teams across Florida, 263 of those teams advanced to the State Tournament, and now 31 are advancing to World Finals. VCS is the sole team representing the Space Coast.

Students headed to the competition hosted by Iowa State University include Kaelin Alvarado, Anna Brait, Haylee Johnson, Ryan Luciani, Stephanie Whiteman, Taylor Weiss and Andersen Law.

The faculty sponsor is Lynne Boucher, head of the school’s STEAM and Robotics programs.
