BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County School Board members voted today to select Dr. Mark Mullins as the next Superintendent of Schools.

The district will now begin the process of negotiating the contract with Dr. Mullins. School board members will vote to approve his contract and start date during the July 10 school board meeting.

A transition period between outgoing Superintendent Dr. Desmond Blackburn’s departure and Dr. Mullin’s first day as superintendent is scheduled to begin July 11.

“I am both honored and excited for the opportunity to continue serving Brevard Public Schools and our community as Superintendent,” said Mullin.

“It is a rare opportunity to continue serving in this capacity in the same community where virtually my career as an educator began 24 years ago as a teacher.”

School board members described the ideal candidate as someone eager to lead a consistently high-achieving school district, be familiar with the latest research on educational leadership, student achievement and school effectiveness, and have the vision, energy, and financial background to manage a complex and growing organization. It also was a priority of board members that the next superintendent would continue the implementation of the current Brevard Public Schools Strategic Plan.

“I think he has evolved into just an amazing leader at the district,” said School Board Chair John Craig.

“He stands out to me as someone who has put the time and effort into seeing every nook and cranny in the district.”

Mullins has served as deputy superintendent and chief operating officer of Brevard Public Schools since 2016.

In this role, he supervises Transportation Services, Food and Nutrition Services, Purchasing and Warehouse Services and District and School Security.

He began his career with Brevard Public Schools in 1994 as a mathematics teacher. Mullins went on to be assistant principal at Palm Bay Magnet High and Southwest Middle, principal at Clearlake Middle and area superintendent for the south region of the district.

Mullins earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and master’s and doctorate degrees in educational leadership from the University of Central Florida.

Brevard Public Schools is one of Florida’s highest performing school districts, earning an “A” overall from the state Department of Education. BPS ranked number 2 among the 14 large Florida districts in 2017 for overall student achievement, and number 2 for college and career acceleration. The school district is Brevard’s largest employer with 9,000 employees serving more than 73,000 students. BPS is the 47th-largest district in the United States and the 10th-largest in Florida.
