Florida Tech Panthers Finish 16th At 2018 IRA National Championships
By Florida Tech // June 4, 2018
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – After canceling the 2V8 and 3V8 Finals due to adverse weather conditions, Florida Tech’s varsity eight crew took 4th in the Third Level Final to help complete the 2018 IRA National Championships with a 16th place overall finish as a team.
“It was a shame that the later races were canceled, but the conditions were not going to improve,” said head coach Jim Granger.
“We all wanted to see how our 2V and 3V faired with its Finals, but participant safety comes first.”
In the Varsity Eight Third Level Final, Florida Tech’s V8 Jaiden Oropallo (cox), Nikola Selakovic, Matas Lukoseuicius, Jaime Rus Alba, Dziugas Nienius, Zilvinas Visockas, Ljubo Gavric, Phillip Machen, and Mohamed Ben Sidhom rowed against Cornell, Pennsylvania, Navy, St. Joes, and George Washington for a 4th place finish. Under the poor weather conditions and choppy water, the Panthers bow crossed the finish lined ahead of St. Joes and George Washington with a course time of 7:12.403.
“I was very happy with how the 1V progress through the weekend”, Granger said.
“We made some switches after SIRA’s and I feel that they gained a lot of confidence in the new lineup with each pass. We finished two places higher than last year, which wasn’t easy given the quality of the competition. I would like to also give a special thanks to our seniors Chirs Field, Corine Roberts-Gapinski, and Phil Machen for all they have done for us over the course of their careers here at Florida Tech.”
The Championships mark the end of the Panthers 2017-18 season, as the team now looks forward to the start of its next campaign on the water, which will begin sometime this fall.
