Florida Tech’s Thomas Steenberg Named SSC Male Scholar Athlete of the Year

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA (Florida Tech) – Men’s Swimming’s Thomas Steenberg has been named the 2017-18 Sunshine State Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Skodsborg, Denmark native, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Florida Tech in the Spring of 2018 with a 3.97 grade point average in global management and finance. This past year, he was named the Nathan M. Bisk College of Business Distinguished Scholar, Florida Tech Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Google Cloud Academic All-American At-Large. Steenberg earned Dean’s List honors each semester during his time at Florida Tech and was a four-time member of the FIT Athletic Director’s Honor Roll as well as the SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

The senior is a four-time All-American for the Panthers. In the pool this season, Steenberg and his teammates were crowned SSC champions in the 400 Freestyle Relay, setting a new school record and reaching a provisional NCAA qualifying mark. He helped lead FIT to a fourth-place finish in 400 Freestyle Relay and fifth in the 200 Freestyle Relay at the 2018 national championship. Individually, Steenberg finished seventh in the 100 Freestyle and 14th in the 200 Freestyle at the conference championship.

On campus, Steenberg held the role of team captain for Florida Tech’s men’s swimming during both his junior and senior seasons. He also served on his team’s leadership council for two seasons. In the community, he spent time volunteering at a local retirement home, assisting in community and engagement activities. He also gave his time as a math and English tutor for grade school students.

Steenberg is the first Florida Tech student-athlete to be honored as SSC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He is the third men’s swimming student-athlete to win the award since it was established in 1995-96.

Voting for the award is conducted among Athletic Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Athletic Communication Directors, and Faculty Athletic Representatives from each of the 11 SSC member institutions.
