BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne Police Department’s newly hired officers completed rifle qualifications this week.

They also worked on rifle-pistol transition drills and scenarios from the sitting position in the vehicle.

The Melbourne Police Department is currently accepting applications for police officers. The minimum requirements to be eligible to apply for this position are as follows:

• Satisfy all established Minimum Qualifications for employment as determined by FDLE.

• All applicants must have currently or previously attended a Police Academy in the State of Florida or provide proof of a scheduled Police Academy start date with a Basic Law Enforcement Academy in the state of Florida prior to submission of application.

With a strong emphasis on Community Policing, the Melbourne Police Department offers a variety of duty assignments including Patrol, Criminal and Narcotics Investigations, K-9, Selective Traffic Enforcement, and Marine units.

Melbourne officers are able to compete for positions in specialty units upon completion of probation. Specialty units include SWAT, K-9, Dive Recovery Teams, Traffic, and Crisis Negotiations.

The department has 169 Sworn Officers, 68 Non-Sworn Civilian Personnel, 21 Part-Time Crossing Guards, and 6 Reserve Police Officers.
