ORLANDO, FLORIDA (AAA) – Natalie Nugent, a Central Florida fifth grader and AAA School Safety Patrol Captain was given the AAA School Safety Patrol Lifesaving Award at her school, Castle Creek Elementary.

Nugent heroically carried out her Safety Patrol duties by saving the lives of seven kindergarteners at different times throughout the school year. In each case, Natalie prevented her fellow students from running into two lanes of oncoming traffic, usually by grabbing their backpack or getting in their way.

Natalie’s leadership has helped other AAA School Safety Patrollers at Castle Creek Elementary remain vigilant in these situations as well.

“She’s even helped other Patrollers to stop more kindergarteners from doing the same thing,” said Kevin Williams, Castle Creek’s Safety Patrol Advisor.

“They now hold on to those students’ backpacks or have them stop as soon as they arrive to their dismissal post. Heroes do exist and that’s who Natalie is – she wants all students to be safe and is willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen.”

Nugent also won the Florida AAA School Safety Patroller of the Year Award in May for her leadership qualities, safety skills, school involvement, and volunteerism. In her nomination essay, she says,

“Participating in my school’s Safety Patrol program really did help me become a better leader…I try my best to help out and keep everyone in the school safe.”

“Natalie is a shining example of the qualities that embody an AAA School Safety Patroller,” said Matt Nasworthy, Florida Public Affairs Director for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “She cares about her fellow students and takes her duty to protect others seriously. She bravely saved multiple lives this past school year and simply considers it part of fulfilling her daily Patroller duties.”
