BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Eight Cocoa Police officers and department employees boarded a bus early Tuesday carrying some very important guests.

Twenty-five Cocoa children made their very first trip to Walt Disney World, thanks to a partnership with Disney and Cocoa Community First, the police department’s non-profit.

The children were selected through contacts with the local school district and spent the day sharing positive experiences with law enforcement officers and making new friends as they make the trip that they would not have been able to make otherwise.

“It builds a bond with the children and it gives us an opportunity as they see us in public to come up to us instead of run away from us,” said Community Resource Officer Chris Hattaway who coordinated the trip with Disney.

“We want all children to know they can come to us and have a positive interaction. It’s about building relationships.”

“Today I’m actually happy because it’s my birthday and I get to go to Disney. I’m very happy,” he said. Another child said she couldn’t wait to experience Disney for the first time so she could talk about it with friends.

For all of the children, it is their first time visiting the Magic Kingdom.
