North Greenville joins Gulf South Conference as an affiliate member for football
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A decision made in 2016 became official Sunday as North Greenville has now joined Florida Tech in the Gulf South Conference as an affiliate member for football.
“Gulf South Conference football is the standard for Division II and is an aspirational league for many programs,” said GSC Commissioner Matt Wilson.
“Our membership worked diligently to create this mutually beneficial relationship, and we are excited to partner with NGU. We welcome North Greenville University to the conference, and I am confident that they will add to the already impressive depth of quality programs within the GSC.”
Located in Tigerville, S.C., just north of Greenville, NGU joins Florida Tech as the only football-only members for the GSC. The Crusaders will have full access to championships and awards this season.
“It is very exciting for everyone at North Greenville University as we become affiliate members of the Gulf South Conference in football,” said Jan McDonald, North Greenville’s athletic director.
“We have needed a home for our football program for many years. The Gulf South is considered one of the very best, if not the best, NCAA Division II football conferences, and we will have to continue to make improvements in our football program as we compete against these institutions. As members, it will make our scheduling process much easier in the future. Again, we are very excited, we are thankful, and we look forward to playing in the Gulf South.”
North Greenville began its football program in 1994 and has had much success, including a recent run to the NCAA Super Regional Championship Game in 2016.
The GSC has a proud football history, including 121 all-time playoff wins, seven different schools advancing to the Division II national championship game, and 11 national titles.
NGU will begin GSC play on September 15 as the Crusaders host the Choctaws of Mississippi College under the lights in Tigerville.
