BREVARD COUNTY • ROCKLEDGE, FLORIDA – The Rockledge Department of Public Safety will hold a “Pushing Ceremony” to put into service a new fire engine at Rockledge Fire Station 37, located on 3500 Murrell Road.

Firefighters and staff members of the firehouse will host this very special and time-honored tradition on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 9:30 a.m.

This custom dates back to the era when fire pumpers were horse-drawn and powered by hand.

Following a fire, the horses would be separated from the pumper cart and both horse and pumper would be washed by the firefighters.

The pumper would then be literally pushed into the station. In contemporary times, a recreation of this event signifies placing a new engine into service.

The event will include an open house, static display and refreshments will be served.
