Staying Focused on your Blog

Blogging is a great way to get your opinion out into the world. When you care about a subject it is easy to spend your days writing about it. When a blog is first started, there is usually a narrowed down, clear focus point. Over time, you may find yourself straying from the original topic.

Blogging is a great way to get your opinion out into the world. When you care about a subject it is easy to spend your days writing about it. When a blog is first started, there is usually a narrowed down, clear focus point. Over time, you may find yourself straying from the original topic.

Your readers may have subscribed for the original subject matter. If you begin to see that readers are leaving or that comments have dried up, it may be time to get back on track. There are some tactics to help you stay focused.

Look Back

Blogs can be progressive. When the entire community on your blog stays active, they may be enjoying the change. You can get so far from the original subject matter, however, that your blog name doesn’t even match anymore.

When you notice that this is happening, look back at your earliest posts. This can help you rewind a bit. It can also spark fresh writing ideas. When you are looking back at your content, be sure to also read the comments from readers. They often share some great insights that can easily offer inspiration for your next, on-topic, post.

Get Readers Involved

There is no greater measure of success than the size of your reader base. Your blog is there for you to express your own ideas; however, you need to also respond to the demands of your readers. Once you have a large audience, you have a responsibility to them. They subscribe to your site with expectations of more interesting content on a subject they enjoy.

Pay attention to the comments to find out which posts they enjoy. You can also invite them to tell you what they want to see more of. You may be surprised to see some of the angles they would like you to write from. This allows for you to have some variety, while still pleasing your audience. There is a lot of good information on building an audience when you start researching how to create a blog.

Take a Break

If staying on track is feeling more like work than the blog you normally enjoy, step back for a few days. You can use your social media sites to let readers know you have not disappeared. Like anything else in life, a little break can give you better perspective.

You may only need to take a day and get your mind off writing. Go have coffee, spend some time with kids, or even volunteer for a day. These activities often help you remember why you started the blog in the first place. You can easily find new content ideas when you get out and have new experiences. Nothing new comes from staring at your computer and kitchen table.
