BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Early last week, Becky was minding her own business as she stopped at Walmart in Merritt Island to run some errands.

While she had no idea her life was about to change, she didn’t hesitate to not only do the right thing, but to do it the exact right way as well!

As Becky approached the store she noticed a small puppy that had been left in a nearby vehicle with the windows up and no ventilation for the poor pet. Becky immediately recognized that the puppy was in distress and quickly went into the store to summons help.

Once inside Becky announced to the staff what was taking place and another citizen who was standing nearby offered to assist. Becky had the staff call 911 to summons Law Enforcement and then returned to the vehicle to render aid.

Once back at the vehicle Becky and Stephen Guidry realized that the puppy was in a very bad way and collectively worked to gain entry into the vehicle by prying back one of the vehicle’s windows to reach the door handle.

Becky and Steven were able to open the door and pull the puppy to safety.

Within minutes after the puppy was pulled from the car, the vehicle owners exited the store, ran to their car and quickly exited the parking lot before Law Enforcement could arrive on scene.

As a result of Becky’s quick thinking, the puppy was rescued and transported to our Animal Care Center for evaluation and medical treatment. As you might expect, Becky requested to give the puppy a forever home and today it was my honor to present her and her family with their brand new puppy…Zena.

I truly appreciate everything that Becky and Stephen did to save Zena’s life and that they took the appropriate actions in doing so.

As many of you know, last year Florida passed legislation that allows citizens to take appropriate action in saving a child or pet that has been left unattended in a hot car and this case is a perfect example of why that statute is so important in saving the lives of pets and children in our state!!

Please join me in thanking Becky and Stephen for doing the right thing to save a pets life and in congratulating Becky and her family on the addition of Zena to their forever family!
