BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Today, I have the pleasure of recognizing Mims Elementary School student, Leighton Lucier, as the recipient of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office “Great Kids” Award.

Leighton is a 2nd grader and was nominated by Brevard County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Deputy Greg Matthews, his teacher Mr. Scott Morgan and Principal Sheryl Haskins.

Although, Leighton has only attended Mims Elementary for one year, he has already made a tremendous impact on his fellow students, staff and faculty with his quick smile and generous heart. He is always the first one to offer assistance to anyone who might need help. When there is a conflict in the classroom, Leighton steps in to offer a calm resolution. There have even been times when Leighton’s older classmates come to him to ask his advice on how to handle a difficult situation.

Leighton not only helps his fellow students but also offers his wisdom and warm smile to the staff at Mims Elementary when needed.

One day, Leighton noticed the the Assistant Principal was having a particularly busy day, so he told her she could “take the rest of the day off” and he would be the AP for the day; she just needed to leave him her radio so he knew who needed help!

Leighton plans to continue to serve others by pursuing a career as either a law enforcement officer or a member of our military. He is an extraordinary example of what it means to be a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office “Great Kid,” as he consistently shows respect for his peers, helps others in their time of need and represents himself, his family and his school with great character and pride.

Please join me in congratulating Leighton for being a “Great Kid!!” I would also like to thanks Principal Sheryl Haskins, Assistant Principal Karen Tabor, Mr. Morgan and Deputy Matthews for submitting Leighton for this well deserved award.
