EDITOR’S NOTE: The following article is written by Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – In late August 2018, a family with their small children were on their way to dine out at the Avenues in Viera.

While the family was waiting at a four way stop sign, another vehicle ran the stop sign and came to an abrupt stop in the middle of the intersection, where the vehicle remained stationary for what seemed like several minutes.

When the victim, and father of the family, attempted to determine what was wrong and the reasons why the vehicle was stopped for such a long time in the intersection, a verbal altercation began between the victim and the driver of the stopped vehicle, Nathan Castleman Scales.

After a short verbal exchange concluded, Scales drove away from the intersection at a high rate of speed at which time the victim proceeded with his family to where they originally intended to dine, believing that the incident had concluded.

Once the victim and his family arrived at their chosen eating establishment in the Avenues at Viera, they began to exit the vehicle. As the victim was assisting his children out of the car, the victim observed Scales approaching him from across the parking lot shouting at him.

Mr. Scales then pointed a handgun at the victim and pulled the slide back as if to load a bullet into the chamber of the weapon.

The victim quickly retreated with his children back into the vehicle in an attempt to shield them from harm. Scales then fled the area in what was later determined to be a stolen rental vehicle.

Agent Randy Truitt was subsequently assigned the case for further investigation and followed several leads that ultimately lead to the positive identification of Scales as the person who committed the crimes. Agent Truitt also discovered that Scales is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing any firearms or ammunition.

Once Agent Truitt’s investigation was complete, a warrant was issued on September 20, 2018 for the arrest of Nathan Scales for the crimes of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

On September 28, 2018, members of the GAME OVER Task Force located and apprehended Scales as he was walking out of an apartment located at 3151 S. Babcock Street in Melbourne. Upon Scales’ apprehension, he was found to be in possession of several cartridges of firearm ammunition.

It was also discovered that approximately two hours prior to Scales’ apprehension, he nearly ran over another law enforcement officer with a vehicle he was operating while he was being ordered to stop in order to investigate a matter related to the sale of drugs.
