BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – A Cocoa couple and two children have been temporarily displaced after a fire engulfed their house Wednesday afternoon near the 1000 block of Cypress Lane.

Authorities say the couple safely evacuated the home after attempting to fight the fire.

Firefighters responded to the scene and quickly stopped the fire in time to prevent further damage.

The fire appears to have started on the outside of the home, according to rescue officials.

Police say the investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is ongoing.

“The fire worked its way into the attic and spread to the roof,” said Yvonne Martniez of the Cocoa Police Department.

“The occupants inside the home were alerted to the fire because they smelled smoke. There were no working smoke alarms present inside the structure.”

Approximately twenty-percent of the home is damaged.

The American Red Cross and the Cocoa Police Department victim advocate is assisting the family.
