Florida Tech’s J.T. Hassell Earns Second Conference Defensive Player of the Week Honors

For the second time this season, Florida Tech football’s J.T. Hassell has been recognized by the Gulf South Conference as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the GSC office on Monday.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – For the second time this season, Florida Tech football’s J.T. Hassell has been recognized by the Gulf South Conference as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the GSC office on Monday.

This is the second weekly honor in Hassell’s career. The senior had a record-breaking day in the Panthers’ 26-23 road victory over Wingate on Saturday afternoon.

Hassell was all over the field for Florida Tech and finished with nine tackles and a school-record four sacks against the Bulldogs. He is only the eighth player in GSC history to record at least four sacks in a game.

The Titusville, Florida native had an even more impressive first half against Wingate, registering eight tackles and 3.5 sacks in the first and second quarter alone. His 3.5 sacks are the most in a single half in program history.

Through five games, the 2017 All-GSC First Team linebacker leads the GSC in tackles (49), solo tackles (33), tackles per game (9.8) and sacks (4.5). Hassell is tied for fourth in the league with 5.5 tackles for loss this season.

Florida Tech makes its return to Panther Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 6, for a GSC showdown with Mississippi College. Kickoff between the Panthers and Choctaws is set for 7 p.m. ET.
