CENTRAL FLORIDA HUMANITARIANS: Bridges Foundation Enriches Lives of Those With Disabilities

More than 350 individuals each day benefit from Bridges’ programs

Bridges, formerly ARC of Brevard, is the go-to agency for clients with significant physical, intellectual or developmental challenges. Many of them have been associated with Bridges for more than two decades. Whether the issue is employment, housing, life skills training or enrichment, Bridges is there for them.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – If behind every good man there is a good woman, behind every good organization there is an equally excellent fundraising arm.

Such is the case with the Bridges Foundation, which exists to support the work of Bridges, the Brevard nonprofit that has so enriched the lives of individuals with disabilities for more than 60 years.

Bridges, formerly ARC of Brevard, is the go-to agency for clients with significant physical, intellectual or developmental challenges. Many of them have been associated with Bridges for more than two decades.

Whether the issue is employment, housing, life skills training or enrichment, Bridges is there for them.

More than 350 individuals each day benefit from Bridges’ programs, which include job training, housing and a range of educational classes from driver’s education to art.

Thinking outside the fundraising box, the Foundation has instituted two major events to help Bridges.

Special Art Special Hands showcases the often-amazing work of Bridges’ client artists, many of whom did not realize the extent of their artistic abilities before enrolling in the agency’s enrichment programs.

The second event, the annual Wacky Tacky Golf Tournament and Social, encourages the golfing community to assume outlandish getups for a tourney with a very serious purpose: helping Bridges with funds for a variety of services.

TEACHING LIFE SKILLS

Three group homes provide safe, decent housing for persons whose physical or mental challenges would make living independently not a viable option. Bridges also has the back of those clients who wish to live independently, for the organization also offers budgeting and other life skills training so these individuals do not run into trouble.

An additional facility, Patriot House, helps homeless vet to take back their lives and transition back into the community.

Bridges helps clients become self-sufficient by coaching them through all the steps of the job search and connecting them with employers or providing them with in-house employment opportunities such as the agency’s state-of-the-art Material Recycling Facility, which has served Patrick Air Force base for more than 15 years.

To enable Bridges to continue its critical work, the Bridges Foundation explores all possible sources of revenue – from individual donations and investments to fundraising events– to inspire others to join in the agency’s mission of “building bridges to better lives.”
