BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A good neighbor watches your back, which is exactly what the Neighbors of Suntree do for their community. The women’s civic group of more than 300 members focuses on helping Brevard through financial support of a host of community service organizations.

“Being part of Neighbors of Suntree is like being with family,” said vice president June Mikell.

“We are like-minded women of all ages who get together and forge lasting relationships. We, as a group have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Although a tight-knit family that hosts many events throughout the year, the Neighbors of Suntree welcomes newcomers to their midst, helping new residents become involved with their new neighborhood.

“We are one of the friendliest groups you would want to know,” said president Carla Parsons.

Since its beginnings in 1984, Neighbors of Suntree, or NOS, has been focused on generating money for charity.

Four major annual events, including a fashion show and a holiday extravaganza, help raise funds, as do a dozen monthly small group activities that also serve to strengthen bonds between newcomers and “old timers” alike.

“While we are enjoying all these fun activities, we never forget our primary goal of raising money for so many local worthwhile charities,” said member Rhonda Watkins.

WHERE FRIENDSHIPS GROW

Almost every nonprofit in Brevard has benefitted from the efforts of NOS, each receiving awards that average $2,000 per charity.

Name it, and chances are excellent that NOS has contributed to the organization, be it Serene Harbor, the Women’s Center, Joe’s Club, Brevard Zoo, Candlelighters of Brevard, the Children’s Hunger Project, Paws for Veterans, Promise in Brevard, the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and Florida Wildlife Hospital, which happens to be another of this year’s Humanitarian Award recipients.

That list is just a small part of the total number of community organizations that NOS has supported.

You don’t need to live in Suntree to be part of NOS, for Neighbors of Suntree welcomes women from all parts of the county.

“This is where friendships start and continue to grow,” said Parsons.
