Eastern Florida State Set To Host Three Top 10 Teams In Jim Grimes Memorial Classic

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Three of the top 10 teams in the nation will be at Titan Field House this weekend competing in the Jim Grimes Memorial Classic.

The Eastern Florida State College men’s basketball team will host the tournament for the second straight season and come in 8-1 and No. 5 in the NJCAA Division I men’s basketball rankings. The Titans have five players averaging at least 10 points a game and are averaging 90 points per game.

The Titans will open the tournament Thursday evening against No. 8-ranked Salt Lake Community College at 7 p.m.

The Bruins come into the tournament 7-1 and have won six straight, averaging 92 points per game this season. Freshman point guard Cameron Mack comes into the tournament averaging 22 points per game.

Former Eastern Florida State College women’s basketball coach Jim Grimes, whose leadership turned the team into champions, passed away in 2017.

On Friday Salt Lake will play Broward College at 5 p.m. and the Titans will host No. 10-ranked Florida Southwestern at 7 p.m. Florida Southwestern is 8-0 this season and the Buccaneers are averaging 95 points per game led by sophomore Charles Manning Jr. who is averaging 17 points per game.

Broward College comes into the week 5-3 and have won five in a row after a slow start. Freshman DeAndre Pinckney is averaging a team-high 18.9 points per game for the Seahawks.

Saturday will be the final day of the tournament as Salt Lake will play Florida Southwestern at 2 p.m. with the Titans hosting Broward College at 4 p.m.

“I am just blown away to be able to host such an amazing event right here in Brevard County and to be able to honor a great man in Coach Jim Grimes in the process,” Eastern Florida State College men’s basketball coach Jeremy Shulman said.

“To have the No. 5, 8 and 10 teams in the nation all right here playing each other is very special and I hope the entire community is as excited as we are and comes out to Titan Field House for this extraordinary event.”

The four teams have a combined record of 28-5 and three of the five games will be a matchup of top 10 teams in the nation. Admission is free to Titan Field House which is located on the Melbourne campus of Eastern Florida State College.
