BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – I am extremely proud to announce that Corporal Travis Fitzgerald of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Agricultural Marine Unit has been recognized as the “Central Florida Marine Officer of the Year!!”

Fitzgerald was recognized last week in Orlando by the Marine Industry Association of Central Florida after being selected from a group of nominees that were submitted from area law enforcement agencies throughout Central Florida.

Cpl. Fitzgerald is an amazing member of our team who is assigned as an Ag/Marine Deputy with the primary assignment of patrolling waterways throughout Brevard County.

In November 2018 during the late evening hours, Cpl. Fitzgerald responded to a report of a despondent man who was threatening to harm himself and had taken a kayak into the Indian River in Grant. His family members had frantically called the Sheriff’s Office for help as they feared he would harm him self.

As a result of the call for help, Cpl. Fitzgerald responded to the area and with the assistance of our Aviation Unit was able to locate the man adjacent to an island in the Intercostal Waterway.

While the subject attempted to avoid contact and swim further into the river, Cpl. Fitzgerald was able to utilize his skills as a boat operator to maneuver his boat between the subject and deeper water, thus forcing him to stay in shallow water and safe from harm. After several attempts to evade, Cpl. Fitzgerald was able to convince the man to surrender and took him into custody for evaluation.

Family members who had initially called were extremely pleased with the professional manner in which Cpl. Fitzgerald conducted himself and praised his efforts. Through the years, Cpl. Fitzgerald has proven over and over again what an amazing asset he is to our agency and our citizens and I could not be more proud of him!!

Please join me in congratulating Cpl. Fitzgerald on this very prestigious honor and also in thanking Paul Berube of Boater’s Exchange for nominating Travis for the award and for all of their amazing support for our agency!
