Florida Tech Basketball Player Derek Murphy Named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week

Redshirt-junior earns his second SSC weekly award of the season

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech Men’s Basketball’s Derek Murphy has been recognized as the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week. This is the second time this season that Murphy received an SSC weekly award after earning Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 26.

Murphy averaged 24.0 points and 11.0 rebounds while leading Florida Tech to a 1-1 record last week against two Top-10 conference opponents.

He notched his sixth double-double of the season on 20 points (7-of-12 FG), 13 rebounds, three assists, and two steals as the Panthers defeated No. 7 Florida Southern, 77-59, on Wednesday for their first SSC win. It was Florida Tech’s first win over a Top-10 team since defeating No. 7 Barry just over one year ago, on Jan. 6, 2018.

Murphy then recorded a game-high 28 points and nine rebounds as Tech was beaten 82-62 by No. 5 Nova Southeastern on Saturday.

Through 13 games this season, the redshirt-junior forward leads the SSC in scoring at 21.8 points per game and is third in rebounding at 8.8 per game. Murphy also ranks ninth in the league in steals per game (1.8) and fourth in minutes played per game (34.2).
