SPACE COAST DAILY TV: Peter Cranis has been selected as the new Space Coast Tourism Development Office Director.  Cranis’ confirmation was made by the Board of County Commissioners during a Board meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12. He is expected to begin his new position on Monday, March 4, and will earn $115,000 a year.

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Brevard County Manager Frank Abbate has selected Peter Cranis, formerly of Visit Orlando and the Orlando Eye, to become the new Space Coast Tourism Development Office Director.

Cranis’ confirmation was made by the Board of County Commissioners during a regular board meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

He is expected to begin his new position on Monday, March 4, and will earn $115,000 a year.

“The selection of a new director was not an easy decision as all three finalists were strong candidates and each offered many positive, creative and insightful plans for the future growth of tourism in Brevard County,” said Liesenfelt.

Liesenfelt expressed his and Brevard County Manager Frank Abbate’s appreciation to the TDC board for their input during the selection period.

“I want to sincerely thank all of the TDC members who participated and helped in the selection process for our new director,” said Abbate.

“Your input was a valuable and important part of our hiring process and we look forward to working with Peter to advance the mission of the Space Coast Office of Tourism.”

Abbate and Liesenfelt recently conducted the interviews of the three shortlisted TDC executive director candidates, which also included Edward Caum and Susan Phillips.

After being interviewed last week, the three finalists participated in a Meet and Greet with the members of the Brevard County Commission and the Tourism Development Council.

Bonnie King has been the acting as the Brevard County Tourist Development Council’s interim executive director.

COMING HOME, EXTENSIVE PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Cranis graduated with honors from of Eau Gallie High School and earned an Associate of Arts degree in journalism from Brevard Community College.

He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Central Florida.

Cranis was an Adjunct Professor at University of Central Florida from 1989 to 2015 and is also Past Chairman of the UCF Alumni Association Board of Directors.

He has also served as an on-air spokesperson appearing in print, online and on many TV and radio programs globally, and has been a speaker at international tourism events.

Cranis’ professional resume is extensive and includes experience in advertising and marketing, banking and telecommunications.

The Brevard County Tourist Development Council was established to promote growth, development and quality of tourism on the Space Coast.

The Brevard County Tourist Development Council consists of nine members appointed by the County Commission that oversees the Tourist Development Tax (Resort Tax), a 5 percent tax on the total rental amount collected from every person or other party who rents, leases, or lets for consideration living quarters or accommodation in any hotel, apartment hotel, motel, resort motel, apartment, apartment motel, rooming house, mobile home park, recreational vehicle park, or condominiums for a period of 6 months or less.

This tax, which is projected to generate about $16 million this year, is collected by the Brevard County Tax Collector and is in addition to the 7 percent State of Florida Sales and Use Tax remitted to the Florida Department of Revenue.
