SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Orlando Apollos scored 20 unanswered points with 17 in the fourth quarter to overcome a 29-17 deficit and defeat the San Antonio Commanders, 37-29, at the Alamodome in San Antonio Sunday.
Orlando cornerback Keith Reaser scored the winning touchdown on a 39-yard interception off San Antonio quarterback Logan Woodside.
It is the highest-scoring game in The Alliance of American Football first two weeks. Orlando moved to 2-0 on the season, while San Antonio fell to 1-1.
The Commanders took an 18-17 lead on a 38-yard field goal by Nick Rose with no time remaining in the first half. Rose added a 37-yard field goal with 9:28 left in the third quarter.
One minute, 18 seconds later, the lead grew to 29-17 when linebacker Jayrone Elliott forced a fumble on a strip-sack of Apollos quarterback Garrett Gilbert and nose tackle Joey Mbu scored on an 8-yard fumble return.
That turned out to the final points of the game for San Antonio. Orlando kicker Elliott Fry kicked field goals of 24 and 47 yards to cut the lead to 29-23 with 13:51 left in the fourth quarter.
The Apollos tied the game on a 23-yard scoring pass from Gilbert to wide receiver Jalin Marshall with 7:49 to play. Forty-seven seconds later, Reaser scored the winning points.
Gilbert passed for 393 yards and two touchdowns in the game with the other score a 21-yard pass to wide receiver Charles Johnson, who had seven receptions for 192 yards.
San Antonio drove to the Orlando 4-yard line in the final minutes, but a Woodside pass fell incomplete on fourth-and-goal with 2:59 left in the game.
