BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA (WESH) – The Cocoa Beach City Commission has passed an ordinance that authorizes police to issue civil citations to anyone caught with a small amount of marijuana.

The change will give officers the discretion to ticket people who possess 20 grams of marijuana or less.

Violators will be ticketed instead of being arrested and charged with a misdemeanor.

Currently, such possession is a misdemeanor that carries a penalty of up to a year in jail.

City Commissioner Karalyn Woulas says it should stay that way, to keep out people who use illegal substances.
