Now in its sixth year, the Brevard Humane Society is requesting “all paws on deck” in an effort to raise awareness and life-saving funds for homeless animals.

“The only thing cooler than surfing dogs are dogs that surf for charity and Cocoa Beach is simply the ideal venue for this competition,” said Theresa Clifton, Executive Director of the Brevard Humane Society.

“The city’s coastal waters are legendary and are the site to many elite surfing tournaments.”

Beginning at noon each sur”FUR” will hit the waves to showcase their best Kelly Slater impression before being graded on their confidence level, length of ride, and overall wave-riding ability by local celebrity judges.

The winner of the event will receive a trophy, $500 in prizes, and of course exclusive “barking rights.” This year, the event is also garnering attention from outside Brevard which could pose “ruff” competition for Surf Pig who will return to defend his title.

For canines who enjoy the water, but are not quite ready to compete, dog surfing lessons will be available for a $10 donation to the Brevard Humane Society.

Meanwhile, pets preferring to keep their paws dry on land are encouraged to enjoy a doggie Easter egg hunt and fun zone including a lure course.

The day’s festivities run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are free for all spectators— dogs are also welcome to access the beach, Sunday only, for a fee of $5 per dog.

Pre-registration for the dog surfing competition is strongly encouraged. For more information regarding this event, please contact Theresa at 321-636-3343 ext. 204.
