A MEMORIAL DAY TRIBUTE

On this Memorial Day, Health First thanks all who have served our country.

All gave some, but some gave all.

A daughter sat at her father’s side for nine days, slowly realizing he wouldn’t be getting better.

When she made the difficult decision to remove her father from life support, one of the nurses asked her if the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) staff at Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center could do something special for the U.S. Army veteran.

She simply replied, “Of course, that would be amazing.”

She was surprised when her father’s nurse, Susan, walked into the room with MICU nurse manager, John. He was carrying an American flag, folded in a triangle, per military protocol.

“It was very emotional.” She remembers John saying, “I’m here to present this flag to your dad to thank you for his service.”

As John spoke in honor of her father’s sacrifice, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

“I remember thinking, how special. We knew he wasn’t going to make it, but he was still alive.”

She noted while her father was not awake, she was confident he was aware of the tribute.

“In that moment, I was very, very sad but felt very proud of my dad. That would be one of the last things he would’ve heard.”

On this Memorial Day, Health First thanks all of those who served and sacrificed so that we may be free.
