ABOVE VIDEO: Space Coast native Kelly Slater proved age is just a number on Friday after he advanced to the semifinal of the Corona Bali Protected when he defeated a young surfing star over half of his age in 24-year-old Filipe Toledo (Brazil).

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Space Coast native Kelly Slater showed age is just a number on Friday after he advanced to the semifinal of the Corona Bali Protected when he defeated a young surfing star nearly half of his age in 24-year-old Filipe Toledo (Brazil).

Slater, a Cocoa Beach native and a 2012 Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame inductee, fell behind early until the fifth wave when Slater scored the heats best score with a 7.33 and followed with his second-best score of 4.97 on the 7th wave.

The 47-year-old Slater, who graduated from Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr. High School in 1991, has been crowned ASP World Champion a record 11 times, including five consecutive titles from 1994–1998, and was not only the youngest title-holder in ’92, but also the oldest when he claimed the title at age 39 this past November.

He is also the all-time leader in career WCT event wins with 55.
