BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – “Volunteers in Motion” is a service coordinated by Space Coast Area Transit that provides transportation for individuals who are unable to use Space Coast Area Transit buses and regular Paratransit service on their own.

The program offers transportation by trained volunteers, who provide with assistance at locations such as medical facilities, pharmacies and grocery stores.

Since its inception, Volunteers in Motion has assisted thousands of individuals who would otherwise be unable to live independently.

The program is in need of volunteers for various positions, including Vehicle Operators that can transport clients throughout Brevard County; drop off and pick up clients at medical facilities; transport wheelchairs and walkers; help clients with shopping and grocery bags; and drop off and pick up prescriptions.

For example, some clients need the volunteer to take them to the pharmacy after a medical appointment or help put groceries into a cart and help take them out of the bags at the client’s home.

Many clients are very frail and need this type of additional assistance. The program also needs office staff who can answer phones, file papers and assist with data entry.

For those interested in volunteering, it’s a simple process. The first requirement of all volunteers is that they care about people. All volunteers are subject to a level II background check, drug screening, reference check, and a review of previous volunteer experience.

Then, once they become a volunteer, they are provided with state-of-the-art vehicles, gas, insurance, and cell phones during volunteering hours, as well as uniform shirts.

For those interested in becoming clients of Volunteers in Motion and utilizing the services, they need to register for the Volunteers in Motion transportation program by calling 321-635-7999 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
