Can CBD Oil Help Diabetic Neuropathy?

One out of 10 people in the United States have been diagnosed with diabetes, and that rate is expected to rise 5% each year. Diabetic Neuropathy is the most common complication of diabetes and occurs when high blood sugar (glucose) damages nerves in the body — most commonly in the legs and feet.

When this happens, you may feel tingling, numbing, sharp pains, sores, loss of balance, muscle weakness, and extreme sensitivity to touch.

Perhaps worse of all, those symptoms only belong to just one of the four main types of diabetic neuropathy. Studies show that around 60% to 70% of people with diabetes have some degree of nervous system damage.

Today, we are looking at the common cause of diabetic neuropathy, the four main types, whether you should be worried if you’re at risk, and how CBD can prevent and treat the condition.

Understanding Diabetic Neuropathy

Those with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are most at risk of developing one or more forms of diabetic neuropathy. When glucose levels are constantly fluctuating, the cells can no longer receive all the nutrients and nourishment they need from food, and this damages and prevents neurons from properly communicating with the brain.

Peripheral Neuropathy: The most common type of diabetic neuropathy, this form attacks the feet and legs first then the hands and arms. Pain, tingling/burning, numbness, and loss of muscle strength are the most common symptoms.

Autonomic Neuropathy: Nerve damage caused by glucose that’s found in the heart, intestines, reproductive organs, eyes, stomach, and bladder. Hypoglycemia unawareness, blindness, bladder issues, sexual dysfunction, and sharp drops in blood pressure are the most common symptoms.

Radiculoplexus Diabetic Amyotrophy: Affects nerves in the hips, thighs, legs, and buttock — more commonly found in type 2 diabetes. Most common symptoms include pain in the affected regions, weak thigh muscles, weight loss, and abdominal swelling in later stages.

Mononeuropathy: Sometimes called focal neuropathy as the nerves in the face along with the upper torso can be affected. In this case, only a single nerve is damaged, which causes sudden but intense pain that should subside on its own with no treatment needed.

Are You At Risk For Diabetic Neuropathy?

There are four main factors that contribute to diabetic neuropathy.

  • Smoking and Alcoholism: Smoking hardens the arteries reducing blood flow to the legs and feet. Alcohol is loaded with sugars that the body breaks down into glucose. Insulin helps store unused glucose in fat, but poor insulin production can allow glucose to move into the bloodstream.
  • Severity and Length of a Diabetic Condition: The longer and more severe your diabetic condition goes on, the more chances you have at developing diabetic neuropathy.
  • Kidney Disease (diabetes-induced):  Diabetic neuropathy can also lead to kidney disease.
  • Poor control over blood sugar levels: Anything that can cause unbalanced blood sugar levels can lead to damaged nerves.

CBD and Diabetic Neuropathy

Before we start, it’s important to note that there are no clinical studies that directly look at CBD’s ability to help with any of the four diabetic neuropathic conditions. However, there are a number of studies that show CBD displays the potential and requirements that can make it an excellent supplement for both protection and treatment of diabetic neuropathy.

Research on CBD Ability to Prevent Diabetic Neuropathy

CBD displays numerous neuroprotective properties that have been thoroughly researched in a number of studies. As well, studies show CBD may help regulate insulin production, which can prevent glucose from escaping into the bloodstream where it can damage cells, organs, and cause diabetic neuropathy.

  • In 2012, one study showed that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a key role in the development of primary diabetes and various diabetic complications. CBD helps regulate and strengthen this ECS.
  • As recently as 2018, a comprehensive review was done that accumulated the results of all major studies done on CBD’s neurological benefits. The review concluded that cannabinoids, in particular, CBD are of particular interest due to their wide-ranging capabilities and lack of side effects in a variety of neurological conditions and diseases.

Research on CBD’s Ability To Treat Diabetic Neuropathy

CBD can help regulate and reduce bad inflammation of any kind as it has a close relationship with endocannabinoids receptors heavily found on cells in the immune system. But CBD’s ability to reduce inflammation of pretty much any kind isn’t the only thing it can help in every way.

When studies look at CBD ability to reduce pain, it appears CBD always help, regardless, if that neuropathic or nociceptive pain.

Conclusion

All-in-all, more research needs to be undertaken that looks directly at CBD’s ability to help both prevent and treat diabetic neuropathy. However, with our limited research available, we have seen CBD shows a world of potential and may be able to help with diabetes and diabetic neuropathy in more ways than one.

Our best advice is to try CBD edibles from UK and see how it works for you. Please be advised that if you’re on a dosage-sensitive medication, you may wish to consult your doctor first as CBD can inhibit enzymes in the liver that break down certain prescription drugs. If your doctor has advised against you eating grapefruit or kale, it’s likely because they are known to do the same.

Besides that, research shows that should only have a positive impact on your diabetic condition.
