BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA —Firefighters responded to the SpaceX facility located in the 800 block of Cidco Road just after 12 noon on Monday after reports of smoke coming from a storage container.

SpaceX is constructing its “Starship” at the site, which is designed to be the largest spaceship ever built.

“SpaceX is doing simultaneous competing builds of Starship in Boca Chica Texas & Cape Canaveral Florida,” SpaceX founder Elon Musk tweeted in response to a photo posted of a Starship prototype under construction at the Cidco Road industrial park.

Upon arrival, firefighters located the structure with smoke and flames visible and immediately began combat operations.

“Firefighters from two engines, a tower truck, district and chief all responded and had the fire extinguished within 10 minutes,” said Public Information Officer Yvonne Martinez.

There were no injuries reported.

The structure is a portable storage container approximately 8-feet by 8-feet by 40-feet and housed mostly welding equipment.

“It’s believed the cause of the fire may be electrical,” said Martinez. “The City of Cocoa Fire Marshal will conduct further investigation to determine exact cause and origin.

The city building inspector ordered all work stopped at the facility until the necessary repairs can be completed. The damage is estimated between $50,000 and $100,000.
