BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – In June of 2019, Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Streiff had the world by the horns.

He had just made Agent at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, was training intensively to represent our SWAT Team at SWAT Round-Up, was an active Tough Mudder Competitor, and was enjoying every STEP of life.

Then his whole life changed when he was in a diving accident that left him not only fighting for his life but also fighting to take just one more step.

Chris was paralyzed from the waist down during his accident and was told he would never walk again or even be able to use his arms enough to operate a manual wheelchair because of the extent of his injuries.

For some of us, it would have been enough to destroy us and everything we ever stood for, but for Chris, it was the next challenge he would face and overcome.

Today, Chris is finishing his finals days of rehabilitation and is making plans to return to work at our agency in a new role. No, not the role he once had, but the new role he has worked hard to attain.

In addition, Chris just completed a mile-long wheelchair race in his manual wheelchair powered by only his two arms and his giant heart.

So while all of us sympathize with those facing challenges as a result of COVID-19, let’s remember, that not being able to go to a restaurant, the gym, a night out at the club or even running short on toilet paper for this short period of time may seem like an inconvenience, but it is nothing compared to the challenges this young man and others like him will face the remainder of their lives.

We Love You Chris…now hurry up and get your butt back to work!
