BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Melanie Murphy has been a member of a softball team for more than half of her life. Her mom, Claudia, introduced her to the game when she was seven years old. The game that her mom played so well, is also the game that is putting Murphy into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame.

Murphy was a standout softball player for the Melbourne Bulldogs. As one-half of the “duo,” which also included Shelby Alsdorf, the Bulldogs were 23-5 her senior year. In that season, Murphy was 16-3 with a 0.80 ERA.

She struck out 200 batters and walked only 20, and if that wasn’t enough, she batted .444, led the team in RBI’s with 35, and was tops on the team with a .691 slugging percentage en route to being was named Cape Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year.

After one year at Weber State University, and one year at Seminole State College, Murphy chose to come back to Brevard County and finish her playing days with the Florida Tech Panthers.

As a junior, Murphy was phenomenal in the circle and on April 26, 2018, she pitched a no-hitter against Lynn University. Murphy finished the season with a 17-9 record and broke the school’s 13-year-old single-season record with a minuscule 1.00 ERA.

The lefty pitched seven shutouts, recorded 108 strikeouts, and held opponents to a .181 batting average.

For her outstanding junior season, Murphy was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference first team, and National FastPitch Coaches Association All-South Region second team.

Murphy entered the 2019 campaign as a pre-season All-American and her senior season was just as impressive as her junior season.

On February 23, 2019, she proved that the pre-season accolades were warranted by throwing a perfect game against the University of North Georgia, the third-ranked team in the nation.

Murphy finished the season with 25 wins and a 1.64 ERA, recorded 141 strikeouts, four saves, and had 21 complete games.

The game of softball has been good to Melanie Murphy. But, more importantly, Melanie Murphy has been good for the game as she is a true ambassador for the sport. Having displayed outstanding character and leadership, both on and off the field, Murphy has left her mark on her favorite sport. (Florida Tech image)

Murphy, once again, was recognized on a national level with All-American honors from FastPitch News, and National FastPitch Coaches Association. She was also named First Team All-Sunshine State Conference and Division 11 Conference Commissioners Association All-South Region.

Ever since the age of seven, when Murphy first picked up a softball, she has been “rounding the bases and heading for home.” And now, Melanie Murphy is “rounding the bases” and heading into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame.
