Melbourne Police have released the identity of the armed suspect killed by police officers as 67-year-old Richard Lee Kampstra from Melbourne.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne Police have released the identity of the armed suspect killed by police officers as 67-year-old Richard Lee Kampstra from Melbourne.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement is continuing to investigate the incident.

Multiple Melbourne police officers were placed on administrative leave after fatally shooting a suspect who was armed with a rifle and approached police officers following a standoff at The Preserve at Longleaf Apartments on Sunday.

According to Melbourne Police Commander Marc Claycomb, the investigation began around 5:37 p.m. when a 9-1-1 call advised two adult family members were having an altercation.

When police arrived, an armed suspect barricaded himself in a room inside one of the apartments. As back-up police officers arrived on the scene, the suspect met police carrying a rifle.

Commander Claycomb said in a release that multiple police officers fired at the suspect, killing him on-site.

“Per the Melbourne Police Department policy, the police officers who fired at the suspect have been placed on paid administrative leave until the conclusion of the investigation,” said Commander Claycomb.
