Brevard County Sheriff’s Office North Precinct Deputies arrested registered sexual offender, 33-year-old Derrico French, after a traffic stop Tuesday on a vehicle in the 5800 block of U.S. Highway 1 in Cocoa. French was transported to the Brevard County Detention Center and charged with numerous offenses, including Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Trafficking in Heroin and numerous traffic and drug-related offenses.    (BCSO imge)

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff’s Office North Precinct Deputies arrested registered sexual offender, 33-year-old Derrico French, after a traffic stop Tuesday on a vehicle in the 5800 block of U.S. Highway 1 in Cocoa. 

According to Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, the driver, later identified as French, exited the vehicle and provided a false name to law enforcement and told deputies his driver’s license was suspended.

“As deputies were investigating his identity, French attempted to get back into his car and drive off,” said a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

“Deputies grabbed French by his arm and tried to extract him from the vehicle.  French accelerated and took off at a high rate of speed, striking the deputy’s arm and upper body with the vehicle.”

According to the Brevard County Sheriff”s Office, as French fled the area, he additionally nearly struck a pregnant woman and her child.

“The female pushed her child out of the way of the approaching vehicle and fell to the ground,” said the Brevard County Office spokesperson.

“Brevard County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and medically treated and released both the female victim and deputy.”

French continued fleeing south on U.S. Highway 1 and jumped from his vehicle while it was still moving.  The driverless vehicle then crossed a ditch and crashed into a fence where it came to rest.

According to Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, French then fled on foot and a perimeter was established and a BCSO K9 began to track the suspect.  A short time later French was located and was taken into custody without incident.

“French was found to be in possession of a loaded pistol, a trafficking amount of heroin, both cocaine hydrochloride and “crack” cocaine, and prescription pills,” said the Brevard County Office spokesperson.

“Further investigation revealed in 2008 French was convicted of Lewd and Lascivious Molestation and he is a registered Sexual Offender.”

French was transported to the Brevard County Detention Center and charged with numerous offenses, including Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Trafficking in Heroin and numerous traffic and drug-related offenses.

French was transported to the Brevard County Jail Complex under a no-bond status.
