AAU Junior Olympic Game largest national multi-sport event for youth in U.S.

AAU Junior Olympic Games Update: Holy Trinity Track & Field Coach Markus Bailey and his son Jonathan Bailey, a track & field athlete and football player, discuss the upcoming AAU Junior Olympic Games.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The excitement is building as we get closer and closer to the 2020 Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games, which will be here before you know it.

Brevard County was recently selected as the host for the Games which will begin Saturday, July 25, and conclude Saturday, August 8.

Approximately 20 games will be played at multiple sites around the county.

A few of the sports will be played away from the Space Coast, but close enough for you to enjoy. Thousands of participants are expected for this two-week event.

Logistics are still in the planning stages and subject to change, but as of now the following is what we have to look forward to:

■ Track & Field events will be held at Satellite High School and will get underway on Tuesday, August 4.

This five-day event will have a number of persons involved in logistics; among them are, Satellite High School Athletic Director, T.J. Gaudy, track coach Doug Butler, Marcus Bailey, Tony Staley. Paul Camble, and Coach O. Entry deadline is Thursday, July 23.

■ Baton will be held in Cocoa Beach.

Registration for packet pickup will be Thursday, July 30, at a site TBD. The competition will begin Friday, July 31 at Cocoa Beach High School. Day two and three will be held at Cocoa Beach Recreation Center on Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2. Candy Dowdy, AAU Chair will be coordinating Baton.

■ Dance will begin Friday, July 31 and conclude on Sunday, August 2 and will be coordinated by Candy Dowdy.

■ Basketball World Champs promises to be full of excitement.

There will be four categories: 5th, 11U DI, DII, and DIII; with five and possibly six venues.

The five confirmed sites are Heritage High School, Melbourne High School, Rockledge High School, Palm Bay Magnet High School and West Shore Jr/Sr High School.

Larry Torchia will be handling basketball activities. The entry deadline is TBD, however, registration will be Wednesday, July 27. Competition begins Thursday, July 28 and will conclude Sunday, August 2.

SPACE COAST DAILY TV: AAU Vice President Rusty Buchanan and Brevard Public Schools’ Matt Susin provided an update on the 2020 AAU Junior Olympic Games coming to Brevard County this summer.

■ Swimming (Short Course Yard), will be coordinated by Olympic medalist Mitzi Kremer.

The Cocoa Beach Aquatic Center will host the swimming events. Registration, practice, and competition will be Thursday, July 30. This three-day event will conclude Saturday, August 1. The entry deadline is TBD.

■ Football 7v7 (Youth) will be held Saturday, July 25 and conclude Sunday, July 26.

Registration will be held on the first day of the competition. Sites are TBD. Josh Borne will be working logistics.

■ Football 7v7 (Adult) will be held Saturday, August 1 and conclude Sunday, August 2.

■ Beach Volleyball will be held at Lori Wilson Park and the International Palms Hilton in Cocoa Beach.

Registration, practice, and competition will be Monday, July 27 and run through Sunday, August 2. Darren Bolton and Gino will be working logistics. Information will be forthcoming on registration, and the number of courts that will be used for competition.

■ Stand-up Paddleboard will be held on the property of Turtle Creek Paradise in Palm Bay.

The competition will be held on Saturday, July 25. Dan Smith with Paddling Paradise in Palm Bay will be coordinating this event. The entry deadline is TBD.

■ The President’s Youth Fitness Program will be held at Viera Charter School starting Thursday, July 30 and concluding Sunday, August 2.

■ Soccer games will be held at Mitch Ellington Park in Merritt Island.

This two-day event will start Saturday, August 7 and conclude Sunday, August 8. Justin Lauer and Bill Quinter will be coordinating soccer. The entry deadline is TBD.

■ Skateboarding will be held at Cocoa Beach Skate Park with Mike Rogers and Ryan Clements coordinating the skating.

More information on this event will follow in the upcoming days.

■ Karate will be handled by the AAU’s Jo Mirza.

Registration, practice, and competition will begin Friday, July 31 and conclude Sunday, August 2. The venue is TBD.

The following games and sites will be held away from the Space Coast:

■ Taekwondo registration will be held on Friday, August 7.

The competition will begin at The Big House on August 8 and conclude Saturday, August 9. The AAU’s Jo Mirza will handle logistics, with registration at the host hotel.

■ Swimming (Long Course Meters) will be held at the Brandon Aquatic Center in Brandon, Florida.

Registration, practice, and competition will begin on Saturday, July 25 and conclude on Monday, July 27. Former Olympic medalist Mitzi Kremer will be coordinating this event. The entry deadline is TBD.

■ Golf will be held at the Orange Lake Resort in Orlando, Florida.

This two-day competition will begin Thursday, July 23 and conclude July 24. The entry deadline is TBD.

Other events scheduled to take place are Equestrian, Lacrosse, Bowling, Archery, Fencing, Rugby and Pickle Ball. More information will follow on these events in the upcoming days.
