BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Jim Kennedy, Democratic challenger for the 8th Congressional District of the U.S. House of Representatives, is taking on the incumbent Bill Posey in the General Election on Nov. 3.

An engineer/scientist who lives in Merritt Island and works at the Kennedy Space Center, Kennedy’s father served in the Air Force in Vietnam, reaching the rank of tech sergeant. After leaving the Air Force, he taught electronics and later became a systems engineer for General Dynamics.

Kennedy’s mother was a homemaker and a beloved wife. Around the time her children finished elementary school, she went back to college and earned a degree in education. She worked as a teacher and administrator until her retirement.

He joined the Navy at age 17. After graduating from Navy boot camp in Orlando, he went to Navy tech school and became an Aviation Electrician’s Mate 3rd-class. Kennedy deployed to Sicily and Turkey with Patrol Squadron Sixteen (VP-16) out of NAS Jax in Jacksonville.

Taking full advantage of the GI Bill, he returned to college as a part-time student while still serving in the Navy Reserves. After graduating with a BS in electrical engineering, he began to pursue his MBA at Harvard University.

Jim Kennedy worked as an engineer, designing systems for the Future Force Warrior – an advanced technology demonstration project that was part of the Future Combat Systems project – and other autonomous systems for the Navy.

He then spent several years designing boats for Hatteras Yachts in North Carolina, before working in the power utilities industry for nearly a decade. It was around that time when he realized he wanted to get back to Florida.

Embracing another career shift, he returned to Central Florida where he designed boats for Ocean Alexander and Sea Ray before he went to work at the Space Center.

Jim is married with five-year-old fraternal twins, James and Genevieve. His wife, Stacey, is a dedicated nurse. Jim and Stacey have been together for over twelve years and are proud to call the Space Coast home.
