BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Eastern Florida State College women’s volleyball coach Carmelo Eleutiza believes in testing his team early in the season.

That will definitely be the case this season as the team begins the regular season Friday against Hillsborough Community College, which are ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA Division I poll, at Pasco-Hernando State College.

The Titans begin the season No. 10 in the NJCAA Region 8 Coaches Poll.

“Hillsborough has been ranked in the top three in the state for the past few years so we know it will be a big test,” Eleutiza said.

“Even though Pasco has moved to Division II, they are always a really competitive team and so it will be an exciting day of volleyball and it will tell us a lot about how good this team is.”

The Titans will also face host Pasco-Hernando who is ranked No. 4 in the Region 8 Division II poll on Friday.

Then on February 2nd, the Titans will travel to Polk State College to face the Eagles who are ranked No. 4 in the nation before beginning a tough conference schedule.

“We try to find good matches right at the beginning of the season, I like to play good teams before the conference starts. It is a tough schedule, but I like a challenging schedule,” Eleutiza said.

The Titans will take the court with six players coming back from last year’s team including Meredis Colon who led the team in both kills and digs last season. Teammate Cassandra Gregory is also back after leading the team in assists and service aces. (EFSC image)

“I am excited to see how we play, we have been a good defensive team in practice and we will see if that translates in matches. With the new players coming in along with the returners, I think we should be a little more competitive,” I want to see how we look on the court, on paper we look good but hopefully, this weekend shows us what we need to work on.”

The Titans will be Titan Field House on the Melbourne campus on Friday, Feb. 5 for the first time this season, hosting a tri-match with Florida Gateway College and Pasco-Hernando.

Fans will be allowed to attend matches beginning in February but masks are required as well as social distancing at all times at the college.
