TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Florida House HB 1, AKA “The Combating Public Disorder Act,” cleared the Florida House session on Friday with a 76-39 vote.
Governor Ron DeSantis lead the way on HB 1 after protests crippled several U.S. cities last year as opponents argued the bill was an attack on First Amendment rights.
Rep. Randy Fine (R-Palm Bay), a co-sponsor of the bill, supported the bill from the house floor on Friday.
“In Florida, we are taking a strong stand against the ‘mostly peaceful’ protests we see here and around the rest of the country,” said Fine.
“This isn’t Seattle or Portland – if you loot and riot in Florida, you’re going to jail. I was proud to be one of the closing Floor speeches today in support of HB 1 which I am proud to co-sponsor.
“And to my friend, Juan Fernandez-Barquin, who carried the bill on behalf of all peace-loving Floridians, well done,” said Fine.
The Florida Senate will need to approve the bill before it can reach Gov. DeSantis’ desk for his signature.
