Eastern Florida State College Titans Tennis Team Places Fourth at National Tournament in Texas

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A trio of Eastern Florida State College men’s tennis players will play for national titles on Friday in Plano, Texas.

Mikar Fisher defeated ABAC’s Baptiste Mercier in three sets in the semifinals of the No 3 singles on Thursday. Fisher, who is the No. 2 seed, won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second set 3-6 to force a third set which Fisher won 6-4.

Fisher, who became the first Titan to reach the finals of the national tournament, will play No. 1 seed Ryo Minkata of Tyler Junior College at 8 a.m. in the final.

The doubles team of Tomas Reche and Bernardo Vieira will play for a national title at No. 3 doubles after defeating Cowley’s Carlos Castillo and Andoni Garmendia 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals on Thursday.

Reche and Vieria will play No. 1 seed Jeff Guerrero and Cash Hanzlik of Tyler Junior College at 11 a.m. The duo also made history, becoming the first Titans doubles team to make the national tournament final.

Dario Kmet, Ramiro Rincon and Sergio Gomez Boix all fell in semifinal matches Thursday.

The Titans head into the final day of the national tournament in fourth place with 33 points. Tyler Junior College leads the tournament with 44 points.

“This has been a long journey with the pandemic for the entire team and support staff. We have had our share of challenges but proud of the way we have come together in the end,” Eastern Florida State College men’s tennis coach Bobby Cashman said.

“We have shown tremendous growth and maturity this spring.”
