BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Registration is underway for a non-credit welding course that starts June 14 designed for workers who want to add basic skills for career advancement and also people who want to learn how to weld because a hobby involves metal.

The course will last eight weeks, from June 14 – August 5 and be taught Monday – Thursday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Eastern Florida State College’s Cocoa campus, located at 1519 Clearlake Road.

Taught by EFSC’s professional welding instructor, the class will allow students to choose to focus on one of the three most popular welding processes: Shielded Metal Arc (stick); Gas Metal Arc (MIG); or Gas Tungsten Arc (TIG).

The evening hours were designed to be convenient for working adults who want to learn welding skills and also hobbyists who may want to add welding capabilities because they restore cars and motorcycles or are artists who want to expand their craft to include metal sculpting.

The cost is $700 with students required to provide their own personal protective equipment (PPE), such as a welding helmet, jacket, gloves, and leather steel-toed boots, plus basic tools.

These items are estimated to cost between $300-$500 and everything except for the boots can be purchased from EFSC if that is more convenient. A complete supply list will be provided.

The skills learned in the eight-week course can potentially translate into a jump start on EFSC’s year-long Welding Technology certificate program.
