Little League Report: Mims, Merritt Island Win in All-Star Baseball, Softball Tournament Action

ACTION CONTINUES SUNDAY AT 1 P.M.

The All-Star tournaments have begun in Florida District 22 and what a beautiful day it was! The sun was shining; the fields were green, orange and white and there was the wondrous sound of teams, fans, officials and volunteers having a great time.

SENIOR BASEBALL: Mims 18, Cocoa/Indian River City 8

■ District 22 Senior Baseball kicked off at Holder Park in Mims with the visitors from Cocoa/Indian River City taking on the home team from Mims.

Mims started off the scoring in the bottom of the first with Jaden Sanchez scoring on a single by Kaleb Sargenti. They extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second inning when Jake Delph reached after being hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch.

Kyle Young then singled and scored on a dropped third strike. Blake Griffin kept the scoring going with a single and an RBI. Brenden Higgenbotham tripled, driving in two more runs, and Cole Redick doubled in the last run of the inning.

Cocoa/IRC battled back in the top of the third with two runs of their own as Alex Johns and Evan Cline each reached by fielder’s choice and were then driven home on a two-RBI double by Dalton Ruth. Mims would answer back in the bottom of the third with two more runs from Kyle Young and Larry Stewart both reaching with walks and coming around to score, extending the Mims lead to 9-2.

Cocoa/IRC would again plate two runs in the top of the 4th off singles by Josh Bunnell and Kyril Ryals who then scored on a two-RBI single by James Costlow to make the score 9-4.

Mims further extended their lead in the bottom of the 4th with a single by Matthew Lankenau and RBI’s by Sanchez and Higgenbotham that got things going. Additional runs were added by Griffin, Sargenti, Redick and Aaron Carroll.

Cocoa/IRC scored a run in the top of the 5th when Josh Bunnell drove in Evan Cline with a single and Spartacus Stephens crushed a 3 run homer to cut further into the lead. But, it would not be enough as Mims took Game 1 by the score of 18-8.

Mims takes a 1-0 lead in the series with Game 2 coming at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

MAJOR SOFTBALL: Merritt Island 11, Port St. John 10

■ The Major (10/11/12) Softball division also got underway on Saturday. The visitors from Port St. John met the Home team from Merritt Island at Fay Park.

Port St. John’s Jayden Marren, Kamryn Dacko, and Lorili Karaguivanis each had RBI doubles to account for 4 of Port’s 10 runs. Jayden Marren pitched the first 2 innings and Addilyn Orick-Force finished out the game for the Port St. John all-stars.

Keilen Cecere was 3-for-4 on offense and pitched a complete game for Merritt Island. Her teammate, Gianna Elliot, made a beautiful line drive catch in the fifth inning for the second out while, on offense, Ember Gold hit a smashing double to centerfield.

Tori Timney brought in the winning run with an RBI single as Merritt Island won the game 11-10.

Merritt Island leads the series 1-0 with the second game scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
