BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The second annual Brevard County Law Enforcement and First Responder Appreciation Day and Bar-B-Que will be held Sunday, July 25 at Kiwanis Island Park on Merritt Island to show support and appreciation to those who risk their lives to protect ours.

The event, which is being presented by a consortium of area businesses and concerned citizens, will begin at 1 pm. at the park, located at 951 Kiwanis Island Park Road.

“We are inviting all law enforcement, EMT and firefighters to come out and bring their families to have a free meal and enjoy outdoor games for children and let our local community businesses thank them and show them the support they deserve,” said Tina Herman of Triangle Auto on Merritt Island.

The public is invited to also attend to say “thank you” and enjoy a delicious meal for a small donation, with all proceeds going to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Charity‘s youth programs.

The idea for the event for a community Bar-B-Que to honor law enforcement and first responders began last year with a discussion by Jennifer Parrish of 321 Closing on the Merritt Island Community News & Info Facebook page and then citizens posted about doing something supportive and positive for our dedicated local first responders.

“The world is going crazy and we felt like we needed to do something positive,” said Herman.

In addition to Parrish and Herman, the primary organizing committee includes Gem and Connie Gurgan of Hayes Meats; Kimberly Tucker of I Do Weddings Plus Events; Stephi Moretto and Nic Moretto of Tactful Elite Security Solution; and Patrick Wallace of Wallace Air Conditioning & Heating.

Kay’s Real Pit Bar-B-Q will provide the equipment to cook the food provided by Hayes Meats.

Parrish said they are looking for more volunteers and anyone who wants to help set up, cook or clean up the event can contact the organizing committee at 321-243-0522.

“This is completely funded by local volunteers and donations,” said Tucker. “The public is invited to say thank you during the event and are welcome to a meal for a donation.

As this event is a 100 percent citizen-funded event, Herman said anyone willing to donate funds for food to please stop by and see Gem at Hayes Meats & Gourmet Foods, located at 285 Fortenberry Road on Merritt Island, as they are still accepting donations.

“Extra donations will go to the local youth program that the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Charity supports,” said Herman.

In addition to the great food, fun games, music and special tributes, Sheriff Wayne Ivey will be on hand to take on all comers in “Dunk the Sheriff,” also for a donation to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Charity.

Adding to the excitement will be a display of law enforcement and first responder equipment, and a contingent of Brevard’s outstanding K9s will also be on hand to educate the public.
