HAITI – A powerful 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday causing multiple deaths and buildings to collapse, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tsunami warning was briefly issued for neighboring countries, which was later lifted.

The epicenter of the quake was located about 7.5 miles northeast of Saint-Louis du Sud.

“High casualties are probable and the disaster is likely widespread,” the USGS said.

“Past events with this alert level have required a national or international level response.”

The timing could not be worse for Haiti as the National Hurricane Center has forecasted that Tropical Storm Grace will reach Haiti late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
