BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – National Hurricane Center is continuing to monitor the activity associated with Tropical Depression Fred, but another disturbance in the Atlantic is getting increased attention by hurricane experts on Thursday.

The newly developing tropical disturbance is located about 1,100 miles east of the Lesser Antiles and is beginning to trek into some conducive weather areas for this system.

NHC says the system has 70-percent chance to form as a tropical depression by the weekend.

Should this system become a named storm, it would be called ‘Grace’.

For Tropical Depression Fred, the system has slowed down its movement drastically near Cuba. Earlier on Thursday, the system was moving west-northwest at 14 mph. However, the latest 8 p.m. report shows Fred only moving 7 mph to the west-northwest and is still labeled as a tropical depression.

NHC does expect Fred to re-strengthen into a Tropical Storm when it impacts the Florida Keys and southern portion of the Florida Peninsula late Friday night.

Brevard County is outside the cone of uncertainty, which is measured to forecast the possible impact area. Still, the Space Coast area could feel some lingering storms and rain showers associated with Fred on Sunday.

Fred is not expected to become hurricane at any point, as of Thursday night.

Hurricane season runs through November 30.
