'Opt Out' requierment also nixed 3-2

WATCH REPLAY: The Brevard Public Schools Board voted to keep masks optional in public schools late Tuesday night during a nearly six hour meeting inside the BPS Educational Services Facility in Viera.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard Public Schools Board voted to keep masks optional in public schools late Tuesday night during a nearly six hour meeting inside the BPS Educational Services Facility in Viera.

The meeting had many fireworks as School Board Member Jennifer Jenkins brought forward a resolution to mandate masks in schools.

After lengthy discussions between the board, medical experts and dozens of public commenters, the measure was eventually voted down on a 3-2 vote.

School board members Jennifer Jenkins (District 3) and Cheryl McDougall (District 2) voted to make masks mandatory, while School Board Members Matt Susin (District 4), Katye Campbell (District 5) and Misty Belford (District 1) voted to keep masks optional.

The other measure brought forward by Jenkins, which would have required students to fill out an ‘Opt Out’ form that would grant the student permission to not wear a mask, was also voted down 3-2.
