BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – In the first release of the Sunshine State Conference Weekly Awards for the 2021-22 fall season. Florida Tech swept the women’s soccer announcement with junior Mariana Mazzocca being tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week and redshirt senior Maria Sanchez Recuero earning Defensive Player of the Week honors.

This is Mazzocca’s first time garnering an SSC weekly award while Sanchez Recuero is receiving the award for the second time in her career. These are the first weekly honors earned by a Florida Tech women’s soccer player since Oct. 21, 2019, when Sanchez Recuero received her first award.

The Panther duo were major factors in Florida Tech opening the season 2-0 with back-to-back road wins over Auburn-Montgomery and Montevallo this past weekend. This is the first time since 2016 that Crimson & Gray has started a campaign 2-0.

Against AUM, Mazzocca scored the Panthers’ first goal of the season just nine minutes into the first half and finished with two shots on goal as Tech earned a 4-1 victory.

Then, in a stout defensive matchup with Montevallo, the Weston, Florida native scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to propel Florida Tech to a 1-0 win.

Over the two games, Sanchez Recuero made fives, allowed one goal, and held Tech’s opponents scoreless for nearly 180 minutes. The redshirt senior made one save and did not concede a goal until the final seconds against AUM.

She then made four saves to keep 2019 Gulf South Conference Champion, Montevallo, off the scoreboard on Sunday. It was the Madrid, Spain native’s sixth career clean sheet.

The women’s soccer team is back in action this Friday, Sept. 10, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne for the Panthers’ home opener at Rick Stottler Field. The kickoff is at 7 p.m.
