BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – For the past five years, the Bossard family, on the anniversary of a near-fatal boat accident, visit the Cocoa Police Department with treats and a special thank you.
In 2016, Cocoa police patrol officers, with assistance from multiple agencies and several civilians, rescued a family of four – including a toddler and an infant – after their boat crashed and overturned in the Indian River near the Hubert Humphrey Bridge.
“At 10:40 p.m. on Friday night, officers responded to the area after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting the boat crash with several people in the water,” said Yvonne Martinez, Cocoa Police Public Information Officer.
“Four patrol officers jumped in and began searching for the victims. A civilian in a boat nearby also assisted.”
The adults and the infant were quickly located but the search continued for nearly one hour for a 23-month old girl.
Cocoa Police Officers Matt Rush and Cpl. Alan Worthy found the girl trapped underneath the overturned boat staying afloat in a small pocket of air.
Officer Rush and Cpl. Worthy pulled the child out from under the boat and got her to paramedics for treatment. She was wearing a life jacket and is in good condition along with the rest of her family.
