BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Cape Canaveral has been the gateway to worlds beyond our own for more than half a century. And now, as the world prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of mankind’s first steps on the Moon, the City of Cape Canaveral celebrates 50 years of the world knowing its name.

Prior to the 1960s, this small coastal community was virtually unknown to all but locals, fishermen and the army of aerospace workers that were busy putting the “space” in “Space Coast”.

So not surprisingly, the City of Cape Canaveral is taking this anniversary seriously — and because the legacy of man’s first steps on the Moon cannot be summed up in a single day’s event, the City has decided to celebrate this anniversary with a series of public art projects, Community events, youth activities and more, all counting down to that memorable morning in July.

The celebration kicks off in April, with a free showing of First Man, the second film in the City’s Spring Movie in the Park Series at Canaveral City Park.

The festivities continue in May with a space-themed poster contest for the 20th annual Cape Canaveral Student Art Show.

In June, the City will unveil eight traffic control cabinets with designs created by local artists commemorating The Space BetweenⓇ and the Moon landing anniversary.

The countdown continues into July with a special photo exhibit in the Community Artifacts Room of City Hall, showcasing that exciting era in the City’s history.

And that’s just a glimpse of what the Summer of Space has in store! This historic milestone will be featured in City events and programs throughout 2019, from Founders’ Day to Summer Camp, with a little something for space fans of all ages.
